How to Get a Bartending job

Bartending positions are highly coveted – and for good reason. Apart from the tip money, bartenders enjoy many perks, such as not having to get up early and the social prestige of serving drinks professionally.

However, getting work as bartender isn’t easy and the competition is fierce. Here are a few tips to help you land the bartending job of your dreams!

Learn and Hone Your Craft

Like any other craft, bartending has a knowledge component and a skills component. In terms of knowledge, you need to know what and how much of each ingredient goes into making the classics, such as Martinis, Manhattans, and Old-fashioneds, to name a few.

Simply knowing what goes into drinks isn’t enough. You’ll need to practice skills such as shaking, straining, stirring, muddling, and blending to apply your theoretical knowledge of making drinks in real life.

Last but not least, practice making actual drinks. Have your friends “order” a drink of their choice and have them try it. You should also try your own drinks, assuming you know how they should taste.

Get Experience

Bartending is one of those jobs that requires experience upfront. You may be wondering how you are supposed to get bartending experience without ever having worked as a bartender.

There are several ways to break into bartending. Some bartenders start out as waiters and bar-backs and get promoted. Like most organizations, restaurants like to hire internally, so being at the right place at the right time and knowing the right people might just give you the break you need.

Alternatively, some bartenders start out at more obscure establishments before moving on to a more popular spot. The key is to get experience wherever you can, especially when you start out, so you can eventually land your dream gig.

Make Friends

Many bartenders got their current jobs through referrals. If you don’t know any bar managers or anyone who can introduce you to one, try to make friends with the bar manager. You can do this by consistently showing up at their establishment and introducing yourself.

Once you’ve introduced yourself, remember to follow up and be persistent. If you get to know the bar manager, they will feel like you understand their business, which goes a long way in getting you a job at their bar.

Remember, at the end of the day, bartenders are in the people business. After you befriend bar managers and get the job, you’ll befriend customers who’ll become your regulars. You won’t be hired on your knowledge and skills alone. In fact, your personality and charm will be just as important to landing you a bartender job.

Where to Find a Bartending Job

Keep in mind that bartending jobs are not limited to bars and clubs. You can find a bartending job at any venue that serves alcohol, including, hotels, bowling alleys, casinos, golf courses, and cruise ships, to name a few.
